Aiming to work in venture capital, but don’t come from a finance background? Here’s something you’ll be relieved to find out: you don’t necessarily have to be a finance professional to be a successful VC. Some of the most prominent early-stage investors today come from operating, product, engineering, and domain-driven roles. Many of our fellows from a variety of backgrounds (including law and medicine!) have been able to work in venture capital firms post our programs. Not because finance is less valuable, but because early-stage investing also requires comfort with ambiguity, curiosity about emerging markets, and the ability to evaluate ideas before they are fully formed. For early career professionals from non-finance backgrounds, the challenge is rarely capability. It is access and exposure. There is no standard entry route, and limited opportunities to develop investment judgment early. This carousel outlines a practical roadmap for building toward venture capital from a non-finance starting point. Applications for the VC Analyst Track are currently open.
